The Course
The Diploma in Aerospace Electronics provides a holistic educational experience for students that include TP core subjects, Diploma core subjects and Cross-Disciplinary subjects (CDS). The graduates of this diploma will be well equipped with life-long learning skills and in-depth specialisation in aviation electronics (avionics). Besides being technologically competent, students will also develop effective communication skills.
The Diploma in Aerospace Electronics aims to give students a head-start in a career in the aerospace industry. Its course structure is aligned with the Singapore Airworthiness Requirements Part 66 (SAR-66), Aircraft Maintenance Licensing, issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).
The course will prepare students with sufficient theoretical aircraft knowledge for attempting or gaining exemption for 12 modules in the CAAS SAR-66 Aircraft Maintenance License basic knowledge examinations for Category B2 (Avionics):
- M01 – Mathematics
- M02 – Physics
- M03 – Electrical Fundamentals
- M04 – Electronic Fundamentals
- M05 – Digital Techniques/Electronic Instrument Systems
- M06 – Material And Hardware
- M07 – Maintenance Practices
- M08 – Basic Aerodynamics
- M09 – Human Factors
- M10 – Aviation Legislation
- M13 – Aircraft Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems
- M14 – Propulsion
All students will undergo an enriching one semester attachment programme with Lufthansa Technical Training GmbH (LTT) for comprehensive practical and computer-based training in aircraft materials, hardware and maintenance practices.
In their final semester, suitable students may be attached to reputable local or overseas aerospace companies for higher aerospace training. This allows capable students to transit into the workforce even before graduation, thereby giving them a head-start in their aerospace careers.
Career Opportunities
Singapore’s aerospace industry is flying high. From humble beginnings in the 1950s, it has grown into a thriving industry that registered an output of S$6.3 billion in 2006, a record 20% increase compared to 2005. In 2007, it registered a 10% growth to another record-breaking S$6.9 billion.
The aerospace industry continues to be a fast growing industry, with a compounded annual growth rate of 12% over the last 15 years. More importantly for Singaporeans, it currently provides employment for around 19,000 people, or around 3% of the total manufacturing workforce.
The government is committed to supporting this growth, and has announced the setting up of a new aerospace park at Seletar.
Hence, given the booming aerospace industry in Singapore and the region, holders of this diploma will have excellent career prospects and opportunities in the following areas:
- Aircraft Maintenance Engineers
- Aircraft Electrical System Specialists
- Avionics Design & Development Engineers
- Avionics System Specialists
- Avionics Test Engineers
