CEN Orientation for Freshmen – "CEN Is 4 U "
|
Usually held in Week 0 or Week 1 of the academic calendar, this annual orientation program for the freshmen is to familiarize them to the Computer Engineering curriculum. Their ever so helpful seniors would also provide advice on how to enjoy their journey with CEN for both the academic and non-academic programs.

| NTU Visit |
About 40 CEN students visited NTU Computer Engineering faculty on the 6th Sep 07. It was an enriching and insightful trip for the students who get a glimpse of what life in the university is like. Besides knowing what the course structure, they got to tour around some of the laboratory facilities. Their future studies concern was also evident during the Q&A sessions when many questions were raised regarding the course. |
|
| Penang Study Trip |
About 35 CEN students embarked on a study trip on 1st to 4th Oct 2007. The trip includes industry visits, understanding of the culture as well as sightseeing and shopping. |

| Exposure to Industry Competition – E-Town Ideas Generation |
On 25th May 2007, CENT Club sent a team of 2 CEN students to participate in the E-Town Idea Generations Competition organized by InfoComm Development Authority (IDA). 3 of our ideas were short-listed for the finals, where the team gave a formal presentation. Eventually, 1 of our idea “SMS For Food” scooped a merit award. The idea is about enabling diners in a restaurant to order their food by sending a SMS with the code that is tagged to the item on the menu. The order is then electronically sent to the kitchen. The cost of the food is then sent to their monthly phone bill. This system saves on time to queue and is cashless. Customers can also request for information about the food item, such as its nutritional value, which will be sent to them via return SMS. If you are interested to compete in industry competitions, please contact the CENT Club.

| Feedback Sessions with Course Manager (CM) |
On 6th July, CENT Club (led by the Program Committee) organized the bi-annual CM Forum. The forum saw about 40 CEN student representatives in attendance. Prior to the forum a student survey was conducted on-line with overwhelming response. This CM forum is a good platform for all students to air their view, provide feedback on their daily lecture/tutorial/lab lessons and other issues. Besides the usual mode of communication via email or phone, many students also make use of this forum to provide “novel ideas” on how they would prefer certain subjects to be conducted. Our very popular PBL mode of teaching has “evolved” throughout the years because of these feedbacks. All pertaining issues were brought up and explained during the forum. CM Mrs Patricia Ng also addressed the audience and explained in detail some of these issues. Huang ShangHao (our 3rd year CEN student) also presented his internship attachment at the University of Mannheim (Germany). Other issues on the agenda included:

| Latest Technical Know-How – CENTech Training |
On 13th July 2007, CENT club organized its first technical training workshop (CENTech training) for the academic year AY07/08. The new CENTech committee was recently established during the AGM on 25th Jun. This committee was formed with the objective to pool together students who are technically inclined and wished to explore new skills beyond their course of study, thus fulfilling the club vision of not only being a club that provides fun non-academic activities, but also provide academic related training to the students. The first training entitled “Fun with Corechart” saw more than 15 students in attendance. The students had a fun time learning to use the Corechart software, which automatically generate assembly language program codes based on the flowchart design. Thus, this helps to speed up the development of PIC-based micro-controller applications. There are many more CENTech training in the pipeline – Basic Java, Computer Virus Workshop and Fun with NXT Robots. If you are interested in the coming events, please contact the CENT Club.
