Lim Lu Kai - Recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Award 2008
After one-month in Junior College, O-level 10-pointer Lim Lu Kai decided that the polytechnic route would better suit him. Having visited TP's Open House, checked out the numerous courses offered and the many exciting student activities, Lu Kai was very sure that the TP was the polytechnic for him. Now, three years later, he has topped his Electronics diploma course bagging 16 distinctions and achieving a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.98. The only child of his taxi driver father and receptionist mother, Lu Kai started excelling academically only after Mr Marvin Chan, his Secondary 2 form teacher who also taught him Science in North Vista Secondary School, encouraged him to put in more effort and studey harder. There has been no turning back since then. Lu Kai has consistently been the top student in his cohort and was placed on the Director's List, Temasek Engineering School's academic roll of honour, in both Academic Year 2005/2006 and Academic Year 2006/2207. Lu Kai also excelled in his co-curricular activities. He helped out at events like Open House, Orientation and Chingay Parade 2006. In 2007, he was appointed president of the E2-Matrix (Electronics diploma) club after serving as vice- president of the club the year before. Lu Kai has been accepted at the Nanyang Technological University to do the Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree course. |

Yap Leong Sun - Recipient of the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal 2008
A man of extraordinary willpower - that is 51 year-old Yap Leong Sun who has literally defied death! In a para jumping incident, the then 28-year old, who was with the elite Special Operations force of Mindef, fell from a height of about 20 floors and landed feet first onto hard tarmac. Through sheer determination and hard work, he regained the ability to walk three years later. Nine years ago, Leong Sun decided to pursue his lifelong dream of continuing his education. He went for a diploma in Computer Studies and later an advanced diploma in Computer Studies classes at Informatics on weekdays, while his weekends were spent pursuing an NTC certification at the ITE. Four years later, Leong Sun enrolled into Temasek Engineering School. Today, he graduates with a diploma in Electronics with Merit and has bagged 10 distinctions, 15As and 2 Bs. A remarkable feat indeed for a man who had to learn Maths from scratch. Leong Sun has been offered a place at Nanyang Technological University to pursue a part-time degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Upon completion of the course, he would like to teach at the ITE because while studying there, he saw many students who were earnest in wanting to upgrade themselves and he would like to make a difference in the lives of such individuals. Congratulations Leong Sun! |
| ....and to our 2007 Top Award Winners | |
Luo Enyu - Recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Award 2007 Enyu chose to take the polytechnic route after he left Anglican High School. He had his mind set on doing an Electronics course at TP as he was extremely interested in physics and maths. Enyu graduated with an impressive Grade Point Average of 3.98 and bagged 24 distinctions. He created history by becoming the first TP student to win the Gold Medal at the national World Skills competition in the Industrial Electronics category in 2006. Enyu went on to represent Singapore in the World Skills competition in Japan in November 2007 and earned the 6th position in the keenly contested world competition. Congratulations Enyu! |

Ang Peng Hong - Recipient of the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal 2007 Having come from the EM3 stream in primary school, Ang Peng Hong was placed in the Normal Technical stream at Temasek Secondary School. There, he performed so well at the end of the year that he was offered a place in the Normal Academic class for secondary 2. Peng Hong rejected the offer. "I know my pace and I need my space", explained the 22-year old. Upon completing his N levels, Peng Hong entered ITE Balestier and graduated with a National ITE Certificate (NITEC) in Electronics (Computer Technology). His Grade Point Average (GPA) at the end of the two years was a perfect 4 and he emerged as top student for his cohort, receiving the Academic Excellence Award for his outstanding achievement. Peng Hong would head straight home after school where he would indulge in his favourite pastime - multi-player online games. Yet, he was always obliging when called upon to take on extra responsibilities or help out in school events. For example, he was assigned to be a mentor to his juniors at a mini workshop, provided assistance in developing training aids for the course and designed an activity tool for first-year students. Peng Hong also represented TP in the World Skills Singapore competition 2006 in the Industrial Electronics category. Peng Hong reached the quarter-final round and was ranked eleventh out of 42 participants in the national competition. Peng Hong graduated with an impressive 22 distinctions and a GPA of 3.92. Truly, this young man who took the long route from EM3 has come far through sheer self-motivation and hard work. Congratulations Peng Hong!
