FAQ on ETCM

1.

Question: What is the difference between Diploma in Aerospace Electronics (T50) and Diploma in Electronics (Aerospace Electronics Option) (T05)?

Ans:   The emphasis in the 2 courses differ, although both courses will give students a good foundation in the fundamentals of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Students in Diploma in Electronics (T05) do a core electronics engineering module followed by one of the following options: Aerospace Electronics, Business, Robotics, Networking and Mobile Computing. Students, therefore, have the flexibility to choose an area of interest to specialize in.

The Diploma in Aerospace Electronics (T50) focuses on preparing students with knowledge and skills for the aerospace industry.  With Lufthansa Technical Training GmbH (LTT) as our partner, students will get hands-on experience with many avionics equipment and also learn about the maintenance practices of the industry. The extra training will give students an edge over other graduates in the industry.

2.

Question: Can ETCM students opt for the Diploma in Aerospace Electronics?

Ans:   ETCM students may apply for a transfer to the Diploma in Aerospace Electronics after the first semester results have been released. Subject to the number of applicants and vacancies, suitable ETCM students may join the Diploma in Aerospace Electronics. Please see the ETCM flowchart.

Students may also consider the Aerospace Electronics option offered by the Diploma in Electronics.

3.

Question: If I am interested in T13 (Computer Engineering) or T12 (Media and Communication Technology), is there any difference in the course curriculum if I enrol for T05 (ETCM)?

Ans:   No, there is no difference. This is because the Year-One curriculum is common for all the 4 diplomas. Students in ETCM will choose one of the 4 diplomas after their Year One.

4.

Question: Is the career prospect for engineering graduate good?

Ans:   From the 2007 Poly Graduates’ Survey, Engineering graduates are the top earners among all Polytechnic’s graduates. Electrical & Electronics graduates (including ETCM), have a starting salary of S$1821, highest among other diplomas like Accountancy, Business, IT, Health Sciences, Chemical & Life Sciences, etc. Pay package is linked to the demand and supply of the job market. The higher the demand for a certain type of graduates, the higher will be their salary package.

5.

Question: Can I further my studies after the diploma course?

Ans:   Yes, many of our students go on to pursue degree courses at our local universities and universities oversea. Our graduates will normally be able to enter direct into the Year Two of the relevant degree courses, hence saving one year of their time.

6.

Question: If I find myself not interested in engineering after I am in the course, can I switch to Business type of courses?

Ans:   Students who are more inclined towards Business type of subjects, can opt for the Business Option in the Diploma in Electronics, after completing Year One in ETCM.

7.

Question: After my engineering diploma, can I proceed to do a non-engineering degree course in Business, Marketing, Accountancy, Arts, Science or others?

Ans:   Yes. The 4 diploma courses in ETCM will equip you with both logical and critical reasoning & thinking skills. Graduates from our courses are able to proceed with a degree course in Business, Marketing, Accountancy, Arts, Science, etc. Many of our students have chosen this path and are doing well.
