World Skills Singapore (WSS) Competition (October 2008)

Skill Area: Mechatronics
Name of Institution: Temasek Polytechnic
Name of Secondary School (Competitors' Names):
Hai Sing Catholic School (Cheu Zikai)
Compassvale Secondary School (Lucas Ng Yong Sheng)

Cheu Zikai and Ng Yong Sheng Lucas, both 19, feel it is a privilege to be in this competition, where they pit their skills against the very best from not just other local tertiary institutions, but also against the best students in the world.

Since young, they were not given many opportunities to excel in their areas of interest.  But today, they have found their passion.

When they were given the opportunity to represent Temasek Polytechnic in the WorldSkills Singapore (WSS) competition, they grabbed it without hesitation.  Since then, they have put their hearts and minds into the training. They have learnt to apply the knowledge and skills which they have learnt in their diploma course, putting them into action.  “Through this competition, we have expanded our horizon and increased our skills-set in automation,” declared Lucas.

In the course of this competition, their limits have been stretched and their potential maximised.  Now that they have qualified for Finals, they are one step closer to achieving excellence in a field for which they have a passion.  It would be a way to show the world that they can do well in what they like to do, rather than what others like them to do.

“The skill that we have acquired would be much more valuable than the prize that we may win,” said Zikai.

Latest News:  This team has won the Silver Award.in the WSS 2008

Daniel Tay and Richmond Chiang, both 20, have indeed come a long way in this competition.

When they were introduced to WorldSkills Singapore Competition (WSS) for the first time, they did not know what laid ahead of them. Everything seemed to be misty in their sight.

Nevertheless, a year had passed and they are now busy preparing for the Finals.  “The guidance from our coaches and teammates has prepared us well and had given us hope for success,” said Daniel.

“Constant practice ultimately leads us to perfection over a specified spectrum of tasks. We value mistakes; we feel they are the gateway for us to advance in our learning,” commented Richmond.

What then is the motivation behind their enthusiasm and willingness sacrifice their time in training for the competition?  “It is our honour to represent Temasek Polytechnic to compete against the best students from other institutions both locally and around the world.  We hope to bring glory to Temasek Polytechnic.  It would be our parting gift when we graduate, an expression of our gratitude,” they both declared.
“We believe in aiming for the top, and in this competition, that meaning striking Gold,” they said humbly.
