An interview with a MTN Graduate working in |

Bong Wan Yin is currently working as an Engineer in Excel Marco. She graduated with a Diploma in Mechatronics with Merit in 2007. Her career progress from being an intern to Assistant Engineer to Engineer, all within one year.
How have the Mechatronics course help in your work?
The Mechatronics course provided me with a solid foundation in mechanical engineering, electronics and computer systems. Other than theories, this course also provided a lot of hands-on work to help me understand the concept behind the theory and built up my problem solving skills. In particular, students have to form their own team to work on a project during the internship program. During the internship, I actually learn not only how to organize a project from the beginning to the end but also how to organize my team members. This improves my communication skills as well.
What is the career prospect that you find in the company?
Excel Marco is a fast growing company. The career advancement opportunities of this company are based on our efforts and contributions to the company. - On-job training not only helps bring my engineering knowledge to the next level, it also further develops my other soft skills such as interpersonal and communication skills.
Share your experiences as a lady engineer in this niche industry (eg, any advantages/ difficulties faced ?)
As a lady engineer in this niche industry, the difficulty I faced was minimal. They are not concerned whether you are a lady or not as long as you are capable in doing things and you are confident of what you are doing. So far the only difficulty I faced was during the commissioning period where I need to go to the shipyard and there is not much facility for ladies as majority of the workers were male. In addition, I missed the chance, which I had hoped for, to go offshore because of the limited facilities for ladies.

Tan Kuan Sheng was bestowed the Shimadzu Well-Rounded Student Award in 2002. During his secondary school days, he only managed an F9 for his English Language paper and had to re-sit his 'O' levels exams. However, he did not give up but presevered and pulled through with an E8 for English Language. He managed to secure a place in TP to pursue the Diploma in Mechatronics. He not only excelled in his academic studies, he also represented TP as captain in water polo, swimming and life-saving competitions.
