Course Synopsis
This course provides the basic knowledge in semiconductor devices and ICs and a good understanding of the complete IC manufacturing process. The electives in wafer fabrication, IC assembly and test and industrial automation will be covered in-depth with orientation towards industrial problems, issues and their solutions.
Career Prospects
The worldwide semiconductor industry continues to grow and enter into newer areas, making it one of the fastest growing industries. Particularly, Microelectronics is a very high value added industry, its contribution to and impact on the economy are significant and rapidly growing. Microelectronics will continue to be the engine of growth for the Internet, computers and communications into the new millennium.
Exciting career opportunities in microelectronics research and development are available in a number of research organisations and fabs in the semiconductor industry. This will also give participants opportunities to participate in the creation of new and important technologies for the future in the areas that include the growing wafer fabrication and IC packaging and test companies. In addition, the associated supporting companies such as their equipment and material vendors/suppliers are also prospective employers for such graduates.
Learning Programme
The instructional methods used will be a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory work and projects. Case studies and discussion will also be an integral part of the learning method.

Subject Synopsis
Semiconductor Devices & Integrated Circuits
Provides the basic concepts of semiconductor material, p-n junctions and electrical contacts. Covers the structures and operational features of MOSFETS and MOS based IC families such as logic and memory devices (SRAM, DRAM & Flash). Participants will also learn the fundamental aspects of IC layout and be familiar with the topographic view of an IC chip.
IC Manufacturing
Gives an overall view of the complete IC manufacturing processes, the related equipment and facility systems for crystal growth, wafer fabrication, IC assembly and electrical testing. Various manufacturing issues such as quality, safety, in-line process monitors, contamination, manufacturing errors and some aspects of IC failure analysis and reliability will also be discussed.
Wafer Fabrication Technology
Covers basic concepts of vacuum technology, plasma techniques and cleanroom technology. Participants will be taught the fundamental principles of various wafer fabrication processes, the fabrication-related causes of IC defects and the working principles of fabrication equipment. They will also be trained to use software tools for the simulation of the different wafer fabrication processes.
IC Packaging and Electrical Testing
Covers IC assembly processes, process material properties, packaging technology and IC electrical testing. Participants will be taught test specifications, test generation and fault simulation, characterization tests, tester interfaces and the modules of a typical test system. The failure analysis of assembly defects and test fallouts will also be discussed..
Industrial Automation
Provide a fundamental knowledge of automation concepts such as pneumatics, electro-pneumatics, programmable logic controllers, robots and robotic programming. Participants will not only learn the working principles, but also apply the automation technologies and acquire hands-on experience in designing and implementing these technologies.
